RESUMO

The body takes care of us in the sense that it ensures our biological existence while incorporating the information necessary for motor activity and emotional life. Through contact with the world and others, it awakens our self-awareness. These interactions produce an incorporation of information that enables us to adapt our bodies to our environment, and our attitudes to interactions with others. This incorporation enriches the plasticity of our abilities and body awareness.

RESUMO

The theme of touch is present in many contemporary issues. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the introduction of barrier gestures had an impact on touch, to the point of prohibiting it. Touch is essential to health care, and retains a fundamental place in the healing professions, particularly osteopathy.

RESUMO

Some nursing homes for the elderly provide holistic care that integrates several interventions, including physical exercise. The aim of this systematic review is to summarize the effects of physical exercise or multicomponent exercise programs on the mental health (wellbeing, anxiety and depression) and cognitive functions of older adults with/without dementia who live in a nursing home and do/do not require wheelchair assistance. To this end, PubMed, PsycInfo and Web of Science are using to identify clinical trials and randomized controlled studies conducted during the period January 2011 to December 2021 to examine the progression of research in this field over the past ten years. In total, 2597 articles are identifying and 21 are including in the systematic review. After selecting articles according to the PRISMA standards, the data extraction and methodological quality assessment of the eligible studies are performing individually by two reviewers and then pooled together. The synthesis of the studies shows that physical exercise or multicomponent exercise programs have a beneficial effect on mental health and cognitive functions. However, this effect is more common among older adults without dementia, compared to their counterparts who have dementia or use wheelchairs. The explanatory mechanisms, lack of benefits from physical exercise and the need to standardize methods are discussing in this regard. Finally, future studies must examine the effects of an innovative and adaptive physical activity program on the mental health and cognitive functions of older adults living in nursing homes.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between the physiological data from subjects and their reported sensory experiences during two types of recovery methods following a handball training session. Female handball players (average age: 21.4 ± 1.3 years; weight: 59.2 ± 3.3 kg; height: 158 ± 3 cm; body mass index, 23.4 ± 2.0 kg.m-2) carried out an athletic training session (rating of perceived exertion RPE: 14.70 ± 0.89) with either a passive recovery (PR) period or cold water immersion (CWI) for 14 min) (cross-over design). Physiological data were collected during the recovery period: CWI had a greater effect than PR on heart rate (HR; bpm), the higher frequencies (HF) of heart rate variability (HRV: 46.44 ± 21.50 vs. 24.12 ± 17.62), delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS: 1.37 ± 0.51 vs. 2.12 ± 1.25), and various reported emotional sensations. Spectrum HRV analysis showed a significant increase in HF during CWI. Sensorial experiences during the recovery periods were gathered from verbatim reports 24 h later. Players' comments about CWI revealed a congruence between the physiological data and sensorial reports. They used words such as: "thermal shock," "regeneration," "resourcefulness," "dynamism," and "disappearance of pain" to describe their sensations. In conclusion, this study demonstrated the link between physiological and experiential data during CWI and we propose that action of the parasympathetic system on the autonomic nervous system can, at least in part, explain the observed correlations between the corporeal data measured and the sensorial experiences reported.

RESUMO

Introduction : The COVID-19 pandemic has warranted the implementation of barrier actions and the wearing of personal protective equipment (PPE). These behavioral adaptations counteract spontaneous self-touching reflex gestures. I propose to explore the mind-body experience generated by these gesture changes in this health context.Method : I conducted a qualitative study with nine nurses who volunteered as reinforcements. The semistructured interviews I carried out were analyzed using the interpretative phenomenological analysis approach. Results : The perception of the risk of self-inoculation is not related to the level of virus exposure. Facial PPE is perceived both as reassuring and difficult to put up with. The experience of self-touches is influenced by the level of attention the subject pays to his or her face and by the medical background related to this. Three kinds of mind-body adaptations are used to control self-touching : control by avoidance, control by keeping one’s hands busy, and compensatory bodily strategies. The representations of the bodily self are modified in terms of gestures and of the feeling of humanness. This generates a form of bodily abandonment and a lived experience of soiled bodies. Conclusion : The results highlight the cognitive load involved in refraining from self-touching and with the wearing of facial PPE. They emphasize the importance of questioning the implications of these sensorimotor modifications. Supporting health professionals in assessing the mind-body repercussions in a pandemic situation appears key.

ABSTRACT: This essay presents a transversal reading of the work of Georges Hébert and Émile Jaques-Dalcroze, considering the relations between body, expression and education in nature. In this movement, education makes the transition from nature to culture and from culture to nature, becoming ecological. Thus, the naturism present in both studies founds and updates the principles of body ecology as a process of education. The ecology of the body involves the interior of us, but also the exterior in an intercorporeal process that involves the body itself and the body of the world.

In this paper we reflect on the body and its appearance, considering the contact with the sun and the tanning and protection practices. On the one hand, investments around protection against ultraviolet rays, not only with the protection of solar creams, but with clothes that promise protection of 98% of the surface covered. On the other hand, the natural tanning done in specialized clinics. These practices provide elements for our reflection on body ecology by allowing us to think about the relationship between the intimate and social body, appearances, desire, social meanings built by medicine, cosmetology and leisure.

Ageing is often described as a crisis. It brings about a rupture with a previous balance. Physical activities can enable people to adapt to growing old as a dynamic process of self-investment. They are also methods of non-medication treatment for Alzheimer's and related diseases. Wandering, so frequent in patients suffering from cognitive disorders, would appear to signify the importance of movement as a principle of returning to the body and preverbal functionality.
